ESSENTIAL COGNITIVE CAPABILITIES

Volunteer work at an animal shelter is an exceedingly rewarding, yet uniquely challenging experience. Please complete and acknowledge all the following statements.

Today's Date *

Situational awareness at all times while handling animals & performing administrative tasks. The ability, once trained, to work independently with minimal supervision, while recognizing limitations in knowledge and abilities, knowing when to ask for help if needed. Will not attempt tasks, including animal handling outside of skill level or training. *

If lacking the ability to work independently, the Volunteer must be able to work alongside a parent/guardian or coach in non-animal handling activities only. *

Ability to distinguish colors and read, understand, remember, and follow instructions and procedures. *

Basic reading, writing, and communication skills. *

Ability to problem solve. *

Ability to communicate professionally and politely. Ability to receive, incorporate, and follow instructions and feedback. *

Maintain a positive attitude and a solution-oriented approach to challenging situations. Ability to cope with an emotionally charged environment in the presence of animals who are homeless, abandoned injured, and/or neglected. *
