ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES (FOR ANIMAL HANDLERS)

To ensure your safety and the safety of the animals in our care, Eastside Adoption Center has the following essential requirements for working with and/or handling animals in the volunteer program. It is our hope that this information also serves as a thorough and useful tool for current and potential volunteers when deciding whether Eastside Adoption Center and its various opportunities are the right fit. Many of these functions are not exclusive to animal handling. We ask that all potential volunteers read thoroughly and complete this form, even if you do not wish to handle animals during your volunteer experience.

Quick reflexes and ability to use both hands simultaneously (for example: open kennel door while handling animal safely). High-level manual dexterity to leash/harness and unleash/harness animals. *

Ability to handle and restrain animals of small to large size with extreme caution and care. This requires average vision, hearing, steadiness of hand and body, quick reflexes, physical strength and mental alertness. *

Capturing of loose and escaped animals with quick and quiet movements, and ability to use hands simultaneously with a blanket or net to capture. *

Must not have strong allergies to dogs, cats or other companion animals that can't be managed by medication, or to chemicals used for cleaning/grooming. *

Ability to deal with strong and unpleasant odors, urine, feces and possible wounds/illness/injuries to animals in our care. *

Ability to remain calm and act appropriately in situations with animals who are upset, frustrated and or fearful, including the ability to remain calm when radioing for help. *

Average vision (with or without correction) and the ability to distinguish colors, see well enough to move safely throughout the facility, distinguish animal body language, and read signs, instructions, and paperwork. *

Ability to hear if an animal is giving warnings, such as growling, yelping, or hissing. Ability to hear calls from alarms and radios such as audible warnings from others or sirens. *

Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written form. *

Ability to react quickly to prevent dogs or cats from escaping (for example: the ability to quickly pursue and retrieve any cats or dogs who have escaped from a kennel or cage). *
